Cabo Pulmo is located in the Southern part of the Baja California peninsula in Mexico. This extraordinary place is one of the few examples in the history of humanity where the relationship between man and nature has produced a balance that seems to be strengthened and beneficial for each other over time.

The history of Cabo Pulmo

The origins of Cabo Pulmo date back to the 18th century, when its first inhabitants devoted themselves mainly to the extraction of mother-of-pearl.

At that time, there was talk of a small settlement with houses made of wood mostly from ships sunken in the past, given the low presence of trees in this area.

Naturally, the extraction of labor led the inhabitants to devote themselves exclusively to fishing activities, despite the centuries-old tradition of pearl fishermen.
With the passage of time, unfortunately, even the fish resources began to decrease substantially, creating problems for the economy and local livelihood.

In the early 80s of the twentieth century, students and university professors reached these places to explain to the inhabitants the importance of the coral reef ecosystem present in their sea, that same sea considered, until then, as a large garden.

After more than a decade, on June 6, 1995, Cabo Pulmo was declared a Marine National Park.

From a fishing village to a world tourist destination

The population of Cabo Pulmo realized that they could devote themselves to tourism and turn it into an economic resource, without damaging the coral reef.

Many locals began to grow professionally becoming Dive Masters; others, instead, invested in accommodation and tourist activities including restaurants, snorkeling trips and fishing.

In few years, an old fishing village turned into a very popular tourist destination.
Today in the Marine National Park of Cabo Pulmo, after 20 years of protection of the barrier, the biomass has increased by over 460%.

This makes the Marine National Park of Cabo Pulmo the most robust marine reserve in the world, within which it has developed an ecological tourism industry, very carefully regulated, which attracts visitors from all over the world.

Visiting Cabo Pulmo with its extraordinary multitude of marine species, is one of the best and indispensable stops in Baja California.
